How to Book a Vet Appointment Online (and Get the Right Slot)

More clinics now let you book appointments online, through their website, an app, WhatsApp or a booking platform. It saves phone calls and lets you see available slots at any hour. This guide helps pet owners book the right appointment, and explains what clinics should offer to make it easy.

It is part of our online vet consultation guide.

Choosing the right appointment type

Appointment type Use it for
Wellness or annual exam Routine checkup, vaccines, parasite prevention
Sick visit / consultation A new problem: vomiting, limping, itching, ear problems
Recheck / follow-up Reviewing progress after treatment
Vaccination only Boosters, if your clinic offers nurse-led vaccine appointments
Video consult Advice, triage, behaviour, follow-ups. See virtual vet visits
Surgery or dental drop-off Booked procedures

Booking the wrong type, such as a short vaccine slot for a pet with three problems, can mean a rushed visit or a second appointment. Use the notes field to explain.

Tips for booking online

  • Add clear notes: species, problem, how long it has been going on.
  • Book separate slots for multiple pets or problems.
  • Check for same-day slots early: many clinics release them in the morning.
  • Turn on reminders: SMS, WhatsApp or email reminders reduce missed appointments.
  • Upload records and photos if the system allows.

When not to book online

For emergencies, do not wait for an online slot. Call the clinic or go straight to an emergency hospital. See pet emergency signs.

For clinics: what good online booking looks like

  • Real-time availability by vet and appointment type
  • Appointment types with the right lengths
  • Automatic confirmations and reminders
  • Easy rescheduling and cancellation, which frees slots for other clients
  • Intake questions that collect the reason for visit
  • Integration with patient records so the vet sees history before the visit

Online booking combined with automated reminders is one of the simplest ways to reduce no-shows. See our guide to veterinary appointment reminders.
